reaganPresident Reagan 1981 Inaugural Address

People should remember as we watch “The One” and the goals he is trying to achieve. Times change I know but certain basic ideas are eternal.

Enjoy this movie.

Heard on Fox today that the O’s popularity is falling.  And that is without the msm reporting anything bad about him.  Seems the closing of dealerships is doing it.
That is a great speech by Pres Regan.

Ah, dear Reagan – cut taxes and increase spending at the same time? Go down a saint.  Every president after you gets to be the goat as they pick up the tab, and so-called conservatives dream of the days when they paid few taxes and enjoyed lavish living (at least those who were rich enough to get rich).

Most of us duplicated this on a small scale with our VISA cards during the 90’s

Am I pushing your buttons, Cynapse?

  4. Cynapse Says:

Not really.  I don’t have to pick up the tab.  Our house was the anti-reagan – we boosted income and paid down debts very quickly during the 80’s.

It’s just funny watching some people take a dump on households for doing the same thing they praise Reagan for doing.

Times were different and the US is a huge beast to manage never mind the world.  Ron did the best he could with what he had to work with and that’s all anyone can do.

At the time it was important to bankrupt the Soviet Union and Star Wars did that. Many saw what was happening including myself and “yes”…there was a bill to pay. Who knew the Twin Towers would fall and the reaction that was required by the people in the years to come?

Hugely expensive and remains so to this very day. There is the thought out there that Bush should have been more like Ghengis Khan. Destroy and leave. There is merit in the argument as we all pay the bills because we’re “kind”.

Now is an even more different time (ie unprecedented) and we see a president who has lowered some taxes and blasted spending into the stratosphere being raked over the coals as irresponsible.  Same canard, no?

I don’t know what to make of him.  He says one thing and does another.  No consistency.

My overall view is that he likes the sound of his own voice and has no clue what he is talking about.  It’s that damned teleprompter.  A computer is generating the message and he parrots it.

His trickle down affect wasnt even that for America’s poor. But he did make Col. North famous.

It certainly trickled down from the public purse to the largest companies . What they did with it who knows, though if the average worker saw any it was coincidental and due more to the market.

    Kind of like Obama’s bailouts.

Reagans lowering of taxes had the effect of doubling the governments tax reciepts.  Unfortunately spending increased more than this.

So lowering taxes has a demonstratable benefit.  Increased government spending not so much.

If Reagans deficit spending was so bad, then it cannot be good if Obama does it.

Trickle down does work….and that’s what pisses off the Comrades.  What absolutely DOESN’T work is government playing economic referee.

  12. Cynapse Says:

If it worked then the US’s deficit wouldn’t have soared during the Reagan and Bush I era.  What Reagan basically did was bribe voters with loans – they enjoyed a low tax “I don wanna pay duh gubmint but still make money off tha public infrastructur” period and by the time the interest on the deficit wiped out the per-household economic gains he was out of office.  If this passes for sound economic policy I think you’ll see another Reagan immediately following this president.

Who are these mythical comrades you’re always talking about (apart from the pre-cursor to Islamists for knee-jerk card to play every time right wing schemes get questioned)

What absolutely DOESN’T work is government playing economic referee.

Then you don’t believe in capitalism because its core definition requires the government to play the role of regulator.
