LCBO, workers agree to extend talks

lcbo_thumbThe deadline for a strike by unionized workers at the LCBO has been extended.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario have agreed to an extension from the original strike deadline of 12:01 Wednesday morning.

“We would not be extending the strike deadline if we did not feel that we can reach a collective agreement through negotiation,” said Vanda Klumper, chair of the union bargaining team. “There remain problems to be ironed out, but if the LCBO is committed to reaching a settlement it can be done.

“Obviously we are not going to subject our customers to the inconvenience of a work stoppage just because the negotiations ran out of time,” she said. “Both teams are working diligently and we hope that our work will pay off before long.”

Frantic customers made last-minute booze runs at liquor stores across the province on Tuesday for fear they would run dry if the thousands of LCBO workers had gone on strike.

The extension means the OPSEU collective agreement remains in force until further notice.

Jack, thankyou for this story.  It would have been the height of cruelty for the LCBO to strike when the garbage strike was on.  Must keep the “peoples” numb during a crisis.  Cheers.

My wife asked me about this story this morning and I pointed out that it was a “non story” and why.  I posted this entry so everyone else would know what I do.

    And “you’re welcome” Fern.
