Real gold gone from Mint, report finds

gold_thumbOTTAWA — There may have been a massive gold heist at the Royal Canadian Mint, an external audit has found.

The findings of the long-awaited audit, released Monday, conclude that $15.3 million in missing gold is not the result of accounting or bookkeeping errors, raising the distinct possibility the gold may have been stolen.

“The unaccounted for difference in gold does not appear to relate to an accounting error in the reconciliation process, an accounting error in the physical stock count schedules, or an accounting error in the recordkeeping of transactions during the year,” the report by Deloitte and Touche.

The Deloitte and Touche report identified three other areas for consideration:

Hmm, how much money do the Liberals now have in their ‘war chest’?   If it was $15.3M I for one wouldn’t be surprised in the least.

That’s about as pointless as me asking

gee…. I wonder how the Conservatives paid for their last round attack ads

    or how about

gee…. I wonder who has had the key to the mint since January 2006? Hmmm…..

    or how about

gee…. we never read about gold disappearing from the mint under the Liberals did we…..

    – don’t you think?

Hyper-partisanship in action – nes pas?

A tad sensitive about anyone referring to missing millions of somebody else’s money and Liberals in the same sentence.   The Libs earned all the satire that is thrown their way about this sort of thing fair and square.

The first report of this said it happened prior to 2005, who was in government then.
Reminds me of that song, A piece at a time, about an auto worker who took one piece of a car at a time.

This is certainly odd.  How could heavy bars of gold just disappear. Sounds like some pretty sloppy security at work here.  Someone must know.  Will this cause negative reaction against the present conservative government?

  12. MaryT says:

That is an awful lot of gold to disappear in 3 yrs, and it was reported the shortages occurred pre 2005.  It would be impossible now to find out if all the gold supposedly purchased and delivered actually made it to the mint.   How big is a bar of gold and what is the value.  It is probably another reason the libs are so anxious to get back to the trough.  Wonder how many other secrets are out there waiting to be discovered.
Follow the money and off shore bank accounts.
Oh, as for supper, I put my family on a crash Johnny Cash diet tonight.

  15. DWT says:

From the ctv.ca article  (my bold type), the first indication that this was possibly not confined to the 2008 fiscal year.

“However, the audit report has recommended an “in-depth review of systems security and an assessment of potential inappropriate activity by both internal and/or external parties.”
The audit report released on Monday also suggests the mint further investigate its refining operations and conduct an accounting review of prior years.
“They feel we may have missed something in our accounting records in previous years that would affect the 2008 year,” said Aquino.
“All avenues are open and we will vigorously pursue the audit recommendations and hopefully come to a conclusion in the near future,” said Aquino. “
