Zelaya vows to return to Honduras (3)

Posted by Jack On June - 30 - 2009

zelaya1_thumbThe exiled Honduran President Manuel Zelaya has said he will return to his country later this week after addressing the United Nations in New York to protest the coup that ousted him from power.

“I go to Tegucigalpa on Thursday,” Mr Zelaya said in a speech before regional leaders in Mangua.

“I’m the elected president, I will fulfil my four-year term,” he vowed.

Mr Zelaya was ousted in a dawn coup on Sunday morning after being roused by his own soldiers while in his pyjamas at the presidential compound, and put on an airplane for Costa Rica.

It was Central America’s first military coup since the Cold War and ended a bitter power struggle with the military. The National Congress swiftly voted in a new leader, Roberto Micheletti, the parliamentary speaker.

Mr Micheletti was appointed the country’s new leader a few hours after Mr Zelaya had been flown across the border and he immediately ordered a 48-hour curfew after denying that there had been a coup d’etat on the deposed president.

“A curfew begins today and ends on Tuesday,” he said at his first press conference on Monday as worldwide condemnation of the overthrow, led by the United States, continued.

However Mr Zelaya has remained defiant.

“I will return voluntarily with the protection of the blood of Christ, for God and for my people,” he said on Monday.

Tegucigalpa city is taken by the military forces, since Sunday morning. Today thuosands of people reunited in Central Park to support the new goverment, considered “de facto” by many nations (including USA). People mostly from evangelic churchs, and mid class. The people who supports Zelaya has was not allowed to enter Tegucigalpa since Sunday, and the hundreds that rallied near the presidencial house, had encounters with the military forces, heavy armed. The people from the mayor cities supports the coup, but these people has been for weeks under a wide campaign (from all the media) against the elected president , taking the citizens to fear because of a Venezuelan invasion. A coup is a coup, and some hondurenians want to cover the sun with a finger tip. Thanks.

A coup is a coup except when it is not a coup Marco.  Democracy was about to be trampled and it was stopped.  Sad that Obama is not criticizing the attempted overthrow of the Honduran Constitution, and instead is criticizing those who thwarted the attempt.

The only reason he was tossed out was because he was not able to fill the court with his stooges, and then went against the rule of law.  Disobaying the law is a fools game and you are eventually caught and punished.

An elected official flouting the laws of their own country, preparing to “rewrite” in the country’s Constitution to reflect their own opinions, defying their Supreme Court…

Hell, why didn’t our army stop Trudeau when they had a chance?
