Warmington: ‘Ashamed’ (1)
“When the country I was born in shames me with its colonial mindset, I refuse to celebrate it, and will not apologize for refusing to do so”
– Former Canadian Arab Federation VP Omar Shaban
He still seems to hate this country.
But Omar Shaban won’t be leaving anytime soon.
“I still have to finish my school,” he said in an interview yesterday, when I asked that if he doesn’t like it here why doesn’t he head back to Lebanon where he grew up. “I am still studying.”
Oh sure, of course! So much for “F… Canada,” eh — at least until his top-notch education is completed.
Although born here but raised in Lebanon, this Canadian calls Canada a “genocidal state” that he’s “ashamed of,” but says he’ll hang around long enough to get a grubby university degree in international relations from Vancouver’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University in B.C. that’ll be accepted the world over.
“I am idealistic,” he tells me.
But not idealistic enough it seems to walk out on a country he despises until he takes maximum benefit from it.

I wonder if this was one of the 15, 000 or so “Canadians” who were rescued from Lebanon a couple of years back when things were getting a bit “hot”.
I’d be perfectly happy to return this character to Lebanon… preferably dropped over Beirut from about 30,000 feet…

Great article by Warmington. Nice to see a journalist dig into a story a bit rather than just scratch at the surface.
Doesn’t it make you feel all warm inside knowing your tax dollars are being used to subsidize education for folks like Omar Shaban without any commitment whatsoever on their part?

If the stories I have read so far on this are any indicator Warmington is misrepresenting Shaban’s comments – he said “F*** Canada Day” — somewhat different than the “F*** Canada” as this “journalist” tried to indicate.
Ya know what, I didn’t celebrate Canada Day either — it doesn’t impress me much any more. I went to a BBQ with a bunch of bikers, took my grandson swimming, played in the sand until he got tired, came home and took a nap with him, and then we watched George of the Jungle cartoons…. end of day.

That sounds like a pretty decent Canada Day to me, stageleft. Not everyone loves festivities… I don’t enjoy crowds but since my family was determined, I made the best of it.
