Simon: Storm Clouds

Posted by Jack On July - 4 - 2009

simonI don’t think I’ve ever seen my country so divided and depressed on the Fourth of July in my lifetime and – no matter what Bob Dylan dreamed up – I’m not young, forever or otherwise. That includes the Vietnam War period when both sides at least had some conviction and excitement for the future, even if wrong. Not so now. The current situation is grim.

Obama is already over. In six short months the now-spattered bumper stickers with “Hope and Change” seem like pathetic remnants from the days of “23 Skidoo,” the echoes of “Yes, we can” more nauseating than ever in their cliché-ridden evasiveness. Although they may pretend otherwise, even Obama’s choir in the mainstream media seems to know he’s finished, their defenses of his wildly over-priced medical and cap-and-trade schemes perfunctory at best. Everyone knows we can’t afford them. His stimulus plan – if you could call it his, maybe it’s Geithner’s, maybe it’s someone else’s, maybe it’s not a plan at all – has produced absolutely nothing. In fact, I have met not one person of any ideology who evinces genuine confidence in it.

On the foreign policy front, it’s more embarrassing. He switches positions every day, such as they are, while acting like a petit-bourgeois snob with our allies and then, when people with genuine passion for democracy emerge on the scene (the courageous Iranian protestors), behaves like a cringeworthy, equivocating creep. Enough of Obama.

Gee the time to get depressed was when Obama was elected. But now the voters are coming to their senses and as soon as we get by the Michael Jackson wake, then we can turn to cap and trade. That hinges on what the Senate will do.

Meanwhile the good news is that Obama has pretty well adopted Bush’s foreign policy (after voting against the surge in Iraq he is now initiating one) and none of his faux pas, such as bowing to a Saudi Prince, are going to have a lasting effect, any more than Jimmy Carter’s appeasements did.

Considering the GOP does not even have a leader yet, things are looking up. Obamanomics bankrupting policies on climate change, “free” Medicare nonsense will be over by the fall and heading into 2010 the GOP will be well positioned to take back some seats.

This is true.  I feel that in my entire lifetime the US has never endured an administration as incompetent as this one is.

And they are going to pay unless they start to act.  Today would be a great day for people to talk among themselves and resolve to correct the situation ASAP.

Colin Powell has pretty well reversed himself on having jumped on the Obama bandwagon without thinking. We all know why people jumped before thinking and that is understandable.

    But the consolation prize is:

    - race is no longer a barrier to entry into the highest office in the world.
    - the excesses of the entitlements and spending about to be brought down by Obama/Pelosi are so far out in left field that they will be stopped. If not by Congress, then by China which is no longer that far left.

The alarm clocks are ringing.  Will enough Americans wake up before it is too late?
