For so many signature moments in American history, there has been a conspiracy theory explaining how it all REALLY went down.
Now Barack Obama is finding out just how stubbornly some false charges persist.
Six months after he was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States, Mr. Obama continues to be bedevilled by a hard-core group of skeptics who contend his Hawaiian birth certificate is an elaborate fake and that, well, he may not be the legitimate president of the United States.
On right-wing Internet sites, in nuisance lawsuits brought by former political opponents, and even in the confines of White House press room, activists who dispute Mr. Obama’s American citizenship are pressing demands for the president produce yet more evidence he was, in fact, born in the U.S.A.
“Goodness gracious. I’m going to be, like, in Year 4, describing where it is the President was born,” a flustered Robert Gibbs, Obama’s press secretary, said this week when a conservative White House reporter asked about the location of the president’s birth.
“And the noble truth is that the President was born in Hawaii, a state of the United States of America.”

I dont know when this article was written, but since Major Cook began his court proceedings, his orders to deploy have been revoked, and he has been fired from his job at the request of the military. Maj. Cook was a reservist.
This all goes away when the form that is locked up in Hawaii is produced.
My question is:
Why not just produce the dam form and get this done with?
Snopes dethroned this some time ago, but it is too ideologically convenient for people to believe that Obama is not an American and therefore should not be president. The initial question was fair play, but the the persistent hounding after the fact smacks of an agenda rather than concerned citizens.
This could get very interesting over time. Imagine the constitutional crisis if it were found that he really wasn’t born on US soil. The Democrats would get all the blame, of course, for what could easily become the worst crisis ever to hit Washington, DC.
Obama could have put this matter to rest a long time ago. Why hasn’t he?
I wouldn’t if I were him. It’s an insult. Moreover, producing it would guarantee nothing and the same lynch mob would probably find some other way to try and deligitimize his presidency.

Obama has proven nothing. Selected people have been allowed to see what is supposed to be his long form birth certificate. Why selected, and why should anyone trust them.
It needs to made public because it needs to be more than a matter of faith.
This is another in a long line of question marks about who Obama is.
This little mystery popping up now and then serves as quite a handy diversion from many of the shifty stuff the ONE and his gang are up to.
I have often wondered why Obama does not just release the document. After all, it is incumbent upon US presidents to demonstrate that he meets the constitutional requirements for the office, one of which is being native born.
But, let’s say he was born in the US. What other reason might he hold back release. I have wondered, therefore, if there is something to hide. Could it be that the birth certificate states Obama, while born in the US, is identified as a Muslim? Do Hawaii birth certificates of 40 years ago contain such info?
@Lee: Are you unaware that Cook challenged his deployment orders in court begging status as a “conscientious objector”? Revoked and fired? Good god, he got exactly what he wanted and now he’s some sort of mistreated hero of the conspiracy theory crowd?
Personally I hope this drags on forever, conspiracy nuts are some of the most entertaining people the world has to offer, and gods know we need the entertainment.

The document being shown as Obama’s birth certificate is NOT a birth certificate but only a document that he was born. I have one of these on my son. I also have his birth certificate. This MUST be investigated to the fullest extent of the law and action taken. Why the push to get Sotomayor into that Supreme Court chair? DUH. We need to press our Congressmen to get on this as well as the other million issues Obama is pushing on them right now. The truth would prevail and maybe, just maybe, the USA could be back to the red, white, and blue.
The thing that bothers me is that Obama does not appear to be able to come up with the original birth certificate that was given to his mother. There could be many reasons for that (mine is so tattered that it is barely legible and is three feet wide).
It could have been lost or stolen. As I understand the situation his mother passed on many years ago as did his grandmother (recently) who raised him and I am not surprised by his inability to produce the original.
What does surprise me is his lack of honesty if that happened and the media’s grab for anything that might prove he was born in Hawaii. Ancient media reports are not evidence and my view is that Obama should just come out and tell it as it was.

I’m laughing because the truth is that he should never have been approved as a Senator (much less a presidential candidate) had he been unable to produce same. I wonder who made that arrangement?
Oh well, life moves on and possession is “nine tenths of the law” you know. The US is stuck with it. Now they have to live with the consequences for four years.
And as a point: Obama did not do that but we all know who did and why (as is now becoming apparent).

Just how fortunate was it that his grandmother, who had stated that he was born in Kenya, died right after his visit to her in the heat of this controversy. While this is troubling to me, this health care reform is almost as bad. The lies and deceit being put forth are unreal. I am a health care professional and I know how the system works and does not work and the truth is not being told. Mass General is dying and the state of MA is in dire straits for trying the very system he is proposing. In Canada, where a friend of mine just returned from a year and a half stent, the tax burden on individuals is well over 50% and the health care is horrible; that my friends is what they call “free health care” if even you can get health care. Why our doctors are not screaming to the tops of their voices in public is a mystery to me. The nurse’s association has always been a far left liberal bunch of suck ups so I would expect them to support this. What they don’t understand is their pay will be cut to the bone and their work load will increase unduly. That is just one of the pressing reasons these documents and this issue needs to be brought to light. But then we’d have Blubber Mouth Biden. Maybe he is so egocentric he is of no threat.

Its amazing how looney the american right has become with looking for the smallest of things to attack the big ‘O’ with. Geez, there are many more important pressing issues to discuss such as the economy, swine flu etc.
I would not consider myself far right, just a conservative. I also do not believe in doing major things in huge chunks. Healthcare reform is indeed necessary. Why not begin with stopping the waste we now consider “normal” in Medicare and Medicaid which would amount to close to billions, that would cover the cost for a huge chunk of the reform. See what that does, then move to the next step. Some people do not wish to be covered so allow them that right but deny them health care when they present to the MD office or hospital. Stop sending money on illegal aliens. There is another chunk. That embellishs our economy as well as frees dollars for research for studies to produce the correct vaccine for things such as the swine flu without breaking the bank. On that point, if a private business can’t make it on their own, let them fail. That also frees up billions from bailouts. Perhaps you both are right to let the “O” citizenship issue go away as we have him for the remainder of this term. We need to focus on our other elected officials to do the jobs we sent them to Washington to do.
