Labour MPs: We'll quit to force Brown out of No10

trouble_thumbRebel Labour MPs are threatening to force a series of parliamentary by-elections in a new attempt to oust Gordon Brown from Downing Street.

Well-placed sources say that a number of Labour MPs are prepared to sacrifice themselves as part of a ‘guerrilla campaign’ against the Prime Minister.

They include some older MPs who are prepared to bring forward their decision to retire at the next Election and others who believe they have been victimised by party chiefs over their expenses.

The plan has emerged with the party still reeling from its humiliating defeat in the Norwich North by-election, which saw Tory candidate Chloe Smith overturn the 5,000-plus majority held by Labour MP Ian Gibson to win by more than 7,000 votes – a swing of 16.5 per cent.

The Mail on Sunday has been told that the ‘guerrilla MPs’ would start resigning at staged intervals throughout the summer and autumn, forcing a series of by-elections which Mr Brown would almost certainly lose.

The pressure on the Prime Minister to step down would then become irresistible.

  1. Mac says:

New Labour must be losing their minds… They’re hastening the demise of their government in a general election. If they truly wish to rid themselves of Brown, why not have all those involved sign a document declaring their lack of confidence in Brown’s leadership and demand a leadership campaign?
