Negotiations between Toronto and the union representing the city’s outdoor workers have resulted in a tentative deal shortly after a second deadline passed this morning after a full night of high-stakes bargaining.
CUPE Local 416 president Mark Ferguson says there is the “basis for a deal” with the city to end a 35-day strike.
A CUPE spokeswoman earlier this morning said the union was on the verge of walking away from the table when the city asked for more time — the second extension granted today. “We were ready to come down here (to the media) to say it was done and the city asked for half an hour,” CUPE’s Pat Daley said.
Mr. Ferguson represents 6,200 outdoor workers, including garbage collectors, drivers and paramedics.

We are screwed.
Maybe, but the garbage will disappear.
Word is the union gave up next to nothing. If that’s the case, the city will be going bankrupt very soon. The center and right in this city need to get behind a compromise mayor so Miller will be thrown out of office. How about John Tory? He’s not Harris enough for the rural types but he can reach the various communities as Toronto. If not, perhaps someone can persuade Lorrie Goldstein to take a shot.
I think you’re right.
The Star has the story….
There’s room here for a line about the unions having the city over the garbage barrel but I’m not touching it…
As much as I believe John Tory is a waste of skin, I suspect he’d be more palatable to the soft-left voters than Lorrie Goldstein.
Bring back Mel Lastman. At least he would have called the Army in and got that mess cleaned up. Noooooooobody does it better!
Lastman would probably build a subway line up Bayview Avenue to take the garbage to the edge of town.
