‘Instead of a battle, let’s sing words’ (1)
MONTREAL — After threatened protests forced the cancellation of this summer’s re-enactment of the 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham, a sanitized commemoration of the historic clash is taking shape. Poetry will replace musket fire, and the hollering of British redcoats will make way for stirring words about the survival of the Quebec nation.
A group of artists announced plans on Tuesday for a 24-hour spoken-word marathon to take place on Quebec City’s Plains on Sept. 12-13. Prominent Quebecers, including Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume, actor Roy Dupuis and Parti Québécois MNA Louise Beaudoin, will read passages drawn from centuries of Quebec literature.
“We said that rather than making a re-enactment with an army, we could perhaps stage a night before battle with words,” said theatre director Brigitte Haentjens, one of the organizers of the event. “Instead of a battle, let’s sing words.”

I wonder if they’ll tell the truth about how it was an Englishman who saved the French Canadian’s right to speak French and practice their religion unimpeded? Somehow, I doubt it.

My wife and I just returned from Quebec City and there are no references to the battle on the Plains of Abrahim. There used to be a plaque with a rough outline of events but now there is nothing. It’s almost like they can just pretend it didn’t happen.

Let’s be honest here, they may have lost the battle but they sure have been winning (by whining) ever since. The ROC doesn’t have the courage to tell them that they lost and to get with the program.
