A head kicker, judge
All I can say is thank goodness the federal Tories banned conditional sentences — or house arrest — for criminals who commit violent crimes.
Because if they didn’t, we would continue to see judges like Marva Smith hand down weak, pathetic sentences like the one she gave out last week.
The provincial court judge was only able to sneak this last one in because the offence occurred before the new law came into effect.
Smith — the judge who once gave a bouquet of flowers in court to a teen robber — gave a year of house arrest to Seif Ammal Ali after he was convicted of aggravated assault and uttering threats.
The Iraqi immigrant knocked a 15-year-old boy to the ground outside Kelvin High School and kicked him in the face soccer-style, breaking his jaw. He could have killed him.
And what did he get for this violent act? A one-year conditional sentence.
