Man gets 2 months house arrest for deadly street race

racing_thumbOTTAWA — A driver found guilty of dangerous driving for his role in a deadly street race has been sentenced to two months of house arrest and ordered not to own or operate sports cars for the next three years.

“This was a foolish, stupid, reckless, uncivilized thing to do,” Ontario Court Justice Dianne Nicholas told 25-year-old Dylan Tyrer before handing down a 12-month conditional sentence that included the two months of house arrest.

Tyrer was found guilty in April of dangerous driving for participating in a July 29, 2007, street race on a road just north of Kemptville with 45-year-old Steven Greenhill.

Court heard the pair sped side-by-side down rural McCordick Road before Greenhill lost control of his white rebuilt 1985 Mazda RX-7 and crashed into the ditch. He died after being ejected from the vehicle.

Tyrer was acquitted of the more serious charge of dangerous driving causing death after Nicholas found the Crown had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt his driving had caused the crash.

There but for the Grace of God …

The sentence is reasonable and it sounds as if the “survivor” is rehabilitating himself. Rural street racing onto gravel without wearing a seat belt? Darwin wins, again.

I disagree — if you want to stop street racing you must make an example.  My view — “drop the hammer” wherever possible.   Put some of these young people in jail and they will soon get the message.
