MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin on Friday—a move that prosecutors say makes sense even in the midst of the government’s grueling battle against drug traffickers.
Prosecutors said the new law sets clear limits that keep Mexico’s corruption-prone police from extorting casual users and offers addicts free treatment to keep growing domestic drug use in check.
“This is not legalization, this is regulating the issue and giving citizens greater legal certainty,” said Bernardo Espino del Castillo of the attorney general’s office.
The new law sets out maximum “personal use” amounts for drugs, also including LSD and methamphetamine. People detained with those quantities no longer face criminal prosecution.

Ay Caramba compadres!!
I thought this story would have drawn more attention. It’s not a bad idea because it frees up police resources.
Within 2 hours of leaving the resort at Cancun, I was offered coke and weed at an unassuming sales stand that claimed to be selling carpets. Drugs are so wide spread there that the police probably are wasting time chasing small fry possession.
If people were allowed to grow a small personal supply of pot for themselves at the same time as enforcement of large pot growing was clamped down on it would dry up the market for criminals and not criminalize the casual user ! if every Canadian who smokes pot was caught and sent to jail the country would collapse as thousands of lawyers, politicians, judges and probably many cops would be subject to ” minimal sentences “. ( Oh, a big few cities worth of people in jail as well ! ).
Now, harder drugs are not going to go away and they do cause a lot more physical harm and should be illegal, but moderate use of pot is a lot closer to drinking wine with a meal than being a crack head ! Oh, and no reason why the ” legal pot ” might not be regulated to the weaker stuff of the 1970′s and not the ” super pot ” that is so high in TCP as to be almost a different drug ….. ( Could be wrong about that as I’m only going on what is said about the current strength of pot by the agencies who are in charge of enforcing the current prohibitions ).
