Gordon Brown has been accused of damaging Britain’s international standing after he repeatedly ducked questions over whether he supported the early release of the Lockerbie bomber.
The Prime Minister insisted that no deals had been done between Britain and Libya and that he was “angry and repulsed” at the scenes of jubilation in Tripoli. However, he twice refused to give a view on the decision by the Scottish government to release Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi back to Tripoli on compassionate grounds.
He also failed to give assurances that al-Megrahi will not appear as “guest of honour” at next week’s celebrations to mark the 40 years of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s leadership, despite predictions that he would do so. This suggests that Britain has been unable to secure the assurances from Tripoli that it had wanted.
After five days of silence, the Prime Minister sought to defuse the row by denouncing the way Libya had warmly welcomed the return of al-Megrahi.
