All politics contains an element of vanity. Most people never look at themselves in the mirror and say, “Yes, the city/province/country needs my wisdom and insights.” Indeed, a dose of vanity is healthy. It permits politicians to stand in front of a crowd and make the case that they can do a better job than their opponents.
Still, the Liberals’ lust for a fall election appears to be all about vanity –and nothing else.
Despite their more than three years in opposition, the Libs obviously still see themselves as the country’s Divine-Right-to-Govern party. And because they cannot conceive of anyone else in charge, they cannot imagine how Canadians can conceive of anyone else in charge either. So they mistakenly assume voters are as desirous of a vote as they are.
Their current rush to get to the polls again — a fall election would be Canada’s fourth in five years — demonstrates just how their absence from power consumes them. Not being in charge gnaws at their souls. It is like an itch they cannot reach, a thirst they cannot quench, a hunger they cannot satisfy.

I think the Liberals should pay back all the Adscam money before they ask us to blow 300 mil on an election everyone knows they will lose. It would be nice if they would name the people who campaigned on dirty money as well.
Liberals should not be able to form Gov’t until they come CLEAN !
Vanity? Yes, plus an unhealthy dose of unmitigated arrogance.
Every time one of the party leaders stands up and says that they know “what is good for Canada” or they know “what Canadians want” I’m starting to envision a pie in my hand.
@timwest: sorry dude, “everybody” doesn’t know what the outcome of the election would be — a lot of people have opinions, but having an opinion and “knowing” something are two entirely seperate things.
Sorry Lorne but there is an issue and it is extremely important, and it is about patronage! The Conservative are within mere months of controlling the senate and that has been the Liberals’ wild card for decades. Whenever there is an issue that is of some concern, the senate becomes the key. It matters little that the Liberals are on the opposition benches when it comes to legislation. The senate can AND WILL block anything that does not coincide with Liberal policy (read ‘thought’) and given the upcoming retirements they are about to be reduced to second place in the chamber.
Everything will be up in the air. The renewed senate will be vastly different from what it is today. Triple E? Perhaps.
The Conservatives thought the last election was a bit dirty? Just wait until the CBC, CTV, the dead tree media and all of the special interest groups start on their offensives.

And all this time I thought CTV stood for ‘Conservative Television’ Damn that Duffy.
Hey stageleft, I hope you used barbless hooks way up north there. If not it’s a real b*tch getting one of those babies out of your cheek. Were the Arctic Char biting? Caught a few of those up north myself ‘a ways back’, mighty tasty.
After watching the MSM pretend to ask tough questions and Michael Iggnateuf pretend to answer them, I become very worried about backroom deals that have been made this week in Sudbury. Did anyone else witness the smugness of all the parties involved at that press conference today. Why isn’t Julie Van Dusen worried about the chances for defeat of the Liberal Party? Something is up!
Do I smell another ‘coalition of looney left separatists?’
@beentheredonethat: I have no use for week-end fishermen who use barbless hooks (or trophy hunters for that matter) , if I’m not planning on eating it I don’t bother trying to catch it or shoot it — and yes, we did have a nice Sunday evening feed of char.
“Do I smell another ‘coalition of looney left separatists?’”
Yup. Only this time the freaks will move much more quickly; THE NEXT DAY.
