Canwest gets court protection from creditors (1)

Canwest announced Tuesday that some of its business units, including the National Post newspaper and Global Television, have obtained court protection from their creditors.

The Canwest Global Communications Corp. media conglomerate has come to an agreement with a committee representing some of its lenders over a restructuring plan for the debt-laden company.

Under the agreement, some of the company’s business units have applied for and received court protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), the company said Tuesday.

Global Television, MovieTime, DejaView, Fox Sports World and the company that operates the National Post are among the units included in the filing.

Notes:

Here comes Canada’s big chance to build our very own Fox News.  I’ve been on about this before.  I also note that I saw a story the other day that somebody is trying to acquire parts of Canwest.  I thought it appeared in the National Post but it seems to have evaporated.  It would be nice if someone can find it and link it.

Let’s hope they make the right moves. CanFox would be a welcome foil to the CBC…

“Canfox” — I like that.  Here’s another — “Ursus” as in “ursus maritimus“.

Funny how some names sound so much more impressive in another language. For instance, harfang des neiges always struck me as being a cool name for a beautiful bird.

  4. Jack, I recently browsed a new website, Joseph C. Ben Ami, apparently an old associate of  the PM.  He reads like a staunch, inflexible large C Conservative, but he’s talking about Conservative TV coming soon.  At the top right of his page.  Some interesting reading there..
