NEW YORK — Comedian David Letterman said on Monday his wife has been “horribly hurt” by revelations of his sexual affairs exposed in an extortion plot against him and he apologized to staff of his popular late-night talk show.

The host of Late Show with David Letterman said in the taping of his Monday show that he will try to patch things up with Regina, whom he married in March after dating for more than 20 years. The two have a 5-year-old son, Harry.

“She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it,” Letterman told audiences, according to a statement from his company, Worldwide Pants.

“And at that point, there’s only two things that can happen: either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.”

He said he was “terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position. Inadvertently, I just wasn’t thinking ahead … my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in.”

On Thursday, Letterman told audiences he had been victimized in an extortion plot by a man who threatened to write a screenplay or book about “all the terrible stuff” Letterman had done. The talk show host then admitted to having had sexual affairs with women employed by his show.

Notes:

What do people make of all this?  Personally, I’m not impressed because I recall what he tried to do to Sarah Palin.

This should prove interesting, I bet buddy news producer is going to walk and leTTeRmaN is going to wear this.

Letterman is a class A jerk.  Again, the old saying proves true, ‘what goes around comes around’.

Personally I find this sorry excuse of a male (he ain’t a man) repulsive.  He dates his wife for 20 years and uses that relationship to cover  his sexual dalliances with other women within his power sphere.  My question, could he get a date if he wasn’t wealthy and in show biz?  If he wasn’t ashamed and embarassed why did he hid it?  Heck even the old lecher, Hugh Hefner, has more integrity than Letterman – at least he  doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not.  He’s a cad on the level of Bill Clinton.  Hope the wife didn’t foolishly sign a prenuptial – otherwise she may not be able to walk away and live in the lifestyle she has grown accustomed to.  A red scarlet letter hanging around his neck could be handy about now.  Sexual proclivities do trip you up, especially when the women get younger and younger.  Cheers.

Doesnt seem to have negatively affected his TV ratings.  At times, I find american culture strange in  that they will watch people like him and Phil O’Reilly who apparently got caught doing the same thing but on a smaller scale.
And as Jay Leno often says, ‘what were they (women) thinking’ to get sexully involved with their boss.

Letterman stopped being funny eons ago.  When they get political, they cease to be amusing.

Just FYI — I never watch him because he’s on way past my bedtime.  UV is right also — his stats are going north very fast because people are fascinated.  I suppose it’s the same as a very bad traffic accident — everyone slows down because they want to look.

When they cart Letterman away on a litter everyone will move on — “show’s over”.

    It’s a fact of life.

Agreed, Jack… but I don’t think Letterman will last much longer. His marketshare was dropping before this mess and once people get past this, I don’t know what Letterman will do to bring them back. Perhaps he’ll start having audience members fight like Jerry Springer?
