Former arms-industry lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber, extradited from Canada earlier this year, will go on trial in January on charges related to a financing scandal surrounding former chancellor Helmut Kohl, a German court said today.
The Augsburg state court ruled that Mr. Schreiber, who arrived in Germany in August after fighting extradition for a decade, must remain in custody while awaiting the trial to begin Jan. 18, court spokesman Karl-Heinz Haeusler said. The 75-year-old dual German and Canadian citizen was indicted on charges of tax evasion, bribery and of being an accessory to breach of trust and fraud. He has denied the accusations.
However, it appears likely that the trial will only go ahead on the tax evasion accusation, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Mr. Haeusler said the statute of limitations has expired on the bribery charge, while the charges of accessory to breach of trust and fraud were not included in the extradition order.
The charges stem from money that allegedly flowed in due to an early 1990s delivery of German armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia.
