Stephen Harper, the piano man and economic manager, is making Canadians so comfortable they want to see him win a majority government, according to a new national public opinion poll.
The EKOS Research survey released to the CBC shows that the Conservatives’ substantial lead over Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals is solidifying – a lead that now has the Tories knocking on the door of a majority government.
According to EKOS, the Tories now enjoy 40.7 per cent support compared to 25.5 per cent for the Liberals, 14.3 per cent for the NDP, 10.5 per cent for the Green Party and 9.1 per cent for the Bloc.
Two polls last week showed the same upward movement for the Conservatives, edging them into majority territory.
But EKOS has gone farther by plugging their numbers into a seat projection model that gives the Harper Conservatives 167 seats, a clear majority. They now have 143 seats.

Notes:
When Jane Taber writes this kind of article Liberals have got to know they are in deep “do-do”. It’s the “Ringo effect” in my view.
There is only one poll that counts. I expect the liberals are going to start some attack ads soon to somehow get the focus of f Mikey. Bob Rae is probably down at the sporting goods store checking prices on knives.

Re: #1 — As you say, there’s only one poll that counts but Harper appears to be on a roll because I’ve now seen three that put him in majority territory. Frankly, I wouldn’t be in any hurry to stampede the opposition.
Everyday they look worse and that can only help him.
These kind of polls should help the Conservatives to lead the government with quiet confidence.
And to change the channel the libs are still trying to make an adscam out of the cheque thing. Will some reporter tell them that this faux scandal will backfire like all the other ones. Those ridings receiving the money are not Quebec bagmen, and voters can see where the money is going. Libs might have a better shot by saying, hey, without us there would be no stimulus money to be passed out.
The money is not stolen from taxpayers to be used for nefarious purposes, and funneled back to conservative funds.
I wish someone would go back in time and dig up photos of every funding anouncement by the federal Liberals under the sainted Chretien, Martin, Turner and his Highness Trudeau – I’ll bet you a dollar to a Tim’s doughnut that the Liberal logo has appeared at least once during those governments announcements. Now lets move on to the provincial governments – how many times has this happened at the local level. Tempest, teapot, and minor infraction. Mary T has it right, this is not “stolen” money hidden in slush funds, this is taxpayer money being used locally for priority projects. CTV has been working overtime to flog this beast – wonder if they pay overtime to the “news” staff. Cheers.
Seems to me Paul Martin was a shoe-in for PM not so long ago. Not so long ago people from Alberta were telling us how great Alberta was and the rest of Canada was bankrupt.
You don’t get chickens until the eggs hatch.
The cheque thing is evidence of over confidence and arrogance. They better cool out or they’ll be sitting with a minority again.
