Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence parties candidate, announced Saturday that she is suspending her campaign for the 23rd Congressional District and releasing all her supporters.
The state Assemblywoman has not thrown her support to either Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate, or Bill Owens, the Democratic candidate.
“Today, I again seek to act for the good of our community,” Ms. Scozzafava wrote in a letter to friends and supporters. “It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so. I am and have always been a proud Republican. It is my hope that with my actions today, my party will emerge stronger and our district and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations.”

The lady is a class act. Now this race is going to get really interesting.

Excellent. Hopefully the Republican Party wakes up now and gets rid of their bureaucratic-type politicians and puts forth candidates who lead based on principles rather than follow the flavour of the day.
It will be interesting to see where this ends up…
And the big winners here? The American people, Sarah Palin and others who publicly endorsed Hoffman.
Harper should pay close attention to this.
I don’t see how this can be good news. Its too late to get her name off the ballot, so she will still get some votes. If the election result is close, this is going to cause lots of problems. And what about those who voted in advance polls for someone who’s no longer running? Do they get another chance?
Zee, it’s sent a message to the GOP that they better put up conservative candidates, not democrats in disguise.
A big loser in this is Newt Gingrich who chose party over conservative principles.
Again I say, Harper better pay attention.
I take back everything I said about Dede.
She just declared her true colors.
I wonder what job Obama promised her?
Yup Jack. She’s definitely no class act.
Newt, you are a stupid man.
Soccermom,
I agree her withdrawing sends a message to the GOP but it would have sent the same messsage if she’d remained in the race and finished a distant third without the potential problems of people voting for a non-candidate and without disenfranchising those who voted for her earlier.
I won’t be surprised if this race is decided by the courts and that’s not a good outcome regardless of how bad Gingerich and the GOP look.
