From the government, a new racist stereotype
Earlier this month, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) awarded $5,000 to a black female newspaper carrier who insisted she had been arrested by police in early 2007 only because of her skin colour.
Early one morning, Sharon Abbott was delivering newspapers to homes in Toronto’s west end. Police Sergeant Stephen Ruffino observed her car double-parked outside an apartment. Then he saw her re-enter the vehicle, turn left without signalling, drive without a seatbelt and swerve from side to side. When she got out again, Sgt. Ruffino tried to stop Ms. Abbott and give her a warning, but she failed to stop and identify herself several times. So he briefly scuffled with her, handcuffed her and detained her for 45 minutes.
Although the HRTO found no “conscious” racism on Sgt. Ruffino’s part, it nonetheless concluded his actions were motivated by a deep-seated prejudice … of which he was apparently entirely unaware.
The Tribunal also stated, without substantiation, that white people in authority have “an expectation of docility and compliance” from black people they encounter.

I would like to throw all those responsible for this statement out a tenth floor window!

Cy Says:
If the authorities are in their 70′s or so that might be true – docility was the order of the day, if not to prevent being lynched then certainly to attempt to curry favour and get ahead in the world. Man blacks stopped being passive in the 60′s when it was finally accepted that being “nice” wasn’t going to gain anything ever. Some of the older blacks still are docile. Thus, the HR tribunal wasn’t completely off base with their characterization. One wouldn’t expect the scared, gun-toting crowd to know that though.

Cynical: rather scurrilous with your comments this morning, aren’t you? Nobody “carries” in Canada, it’s against the law to do so. White or black. I don’t recall the last time anyone, including a black person, was “lynched” here. Do you? Mobs with torches and rope?
I used to deliver the Vancouver Sun at 0400 H in the early 90′s. Got stopped by the cops all the time. Until they got to know me. I’m white. You roam around West Vancouver, or anywhere on the North Shore in a rusty old Toyota at 0400 H, fail to obey the traffic signs and you probably will be pulled over, too. Even in your silver grey Beemer with the tinted windows.

Cy Says:
Scurrilous – nice word, although I’m not sure how it applies to my post. Nothing even slightly profane existed in it.
The docile attitude definitely emerged due to the more violent side of slavery, which was practiced in America and the Caribbean – the two primary sources for Canada’s black population (slavery was also practiced in Canada, though I’ve never heard of more than 1 or 2 mob lynchings). Just because you weren’t born into a situation does not mean you don’t carry the cultural legacy. Being docile was a matter of survival, and in Canada it was primarily to avoid harassment situations like the one alleged in this case (though back then the cases were a little more clear cut). The tough guy attitude emerged for the same reason – why is it that most of the shootings in Toronto emerge from 1 ethnic group from 1 country? Visit that and land and study its history – the answer becomes obvious. Cultural legacy.
As for carrying guns … gangstas in Toronto carry all the time. It’s also true of Edmonton, near which I think you live. Finally, it’s not uncommon to see a truck with a gun rack in the back parked in front of a non-GTA bar. I’ve even seen it in the 905 region.

Perhaps the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario should investigate some real racism, like this for example:
http://www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/63109–three-suspects-wanted-for-brampton-murder
Here we have a White family brutalized by 3 Negro males that tie-up and torture the family and then MURDER one of them.
Now THAT is racism!

Thats right cynapse, looking at somebody of a different race is racism, but tying up and brutally torturing a family and then shooting one to death, well, nothing to see here, move along!
Oh did I mention, one of those arrested is an illegal immigrant,in other words he should NEVER have been here in the first place.

Cy Says:
No, actually it sounds like you think you would get a raw deal just because you are white, as though people who actually care about racism don’t have the intelligence to determine the difference between:
1) A chinese guy punches and indian because the indian stole his bike
vs
2) A chinese guy punches an indian for being an indian
Only one of those cases can be chalked up to racism, but you try to muddy the waters because you know that people of your political persuation will come up on the short end of the stick even with that restriction. So you have to paint people from your own group of limp-wristed patsies and minorities as Jesse Jacksons conspiring to destroy you just for the sake of doing so. Your original comment was the 2-line version of this plan.
I don’t profit from keeping rednecks at bay – I just get to live as a first-class citizen. Too bad for you if you have a problem with it.

Brian S Says:
That’s it? Obviously the worst case of racism in Ontario, since it was given priority status by our Human Rights Tribunal, is that a black person driving like an asshole was pulled over by the police and then temporarily handcuffed for not cooperating? With no real harm coming to her? Then the HRTO used the opportunity as a means of spending taxpayer money on psychoanalyzing all white people in authority. I guess if HRTO employees are going to be fake lawyers, they might as well be fake psychiatrists too, since they have to do something to justify their tax-payer funded paychecks in the face of the huge wave of non-racist behavior that must be going on in Ontario if this is the kind of thing they choose to spend their time on. What a pathetic joke.

Cynapse,Lets turn your comment # 13 around a little bit and add some reality to it.
A Negro on a bicycle, over and over and over again preys on the Asian store owners and vendors in Toronto’s downtown Chinatown by stealing and shoplifting, robbing and thieving.
He targets ONLY Asians in his dastardly crimes.
The store owners have had enough and one of them captures the criminal black guy,hog ties him and delivers him to the police.
-
Here’s the question for YOU cynapse, and keep in mind the Black perp ONLY targeted Asians:
Was there any Racism and “Racial Profiling” being committed by the Black thief?
-
And should an increased amount of time be added to his term of incarceration because of the addition of ”Hate and Bias” in his targeting of Asians?

Nearly all the stores of that type in that area are Asian-owned. I know – I shop there. Nice try. Work with Don – you guys may find a way to vilify the rest of the world yet. Sorry, G, but as Obama is learning, being the king has its drawbacks. When you sneeze, the earth shakes. Trying to recast every crime committed by black shoplifters and drug enforcers as a hate crime isn’t going to cut it.

I have not commented on the merits of this case, in part because the paltry information provided was amid an editorial from the NP attempting to open the flood gates for the good ol boys. Editorials, while barely distinguishable from news (thank you, Fox), are still pretty poor sources of information, except by people who want to use it to back up the premise of the editorial.
Moreover, Brian, how much hate crime are you aware of? Does every hate crime get reported? I can tell you that most don’t, by estimation of the fact that I can think of several parallel incidents to the ones that do make it to the panel. Much like rape victims, hate crime victims don’t want to get it all over again and usually keep quiet unless their lives are in danger. It would take a hell of a lot to get me in one of those courts, because the punishment is a permanent designation as “whiner” or “troublemaker”. Most of the kids I’ve spoken to say issues are better off solved in the streets, and given the attitudes around here they may have a point.

Cunctator Says:
The notion of a hate crime is nonsense. Either everyone is equal before the law, or the law is partial — and, if the latter, than there is no rule of law. Like so many left-wing ideas, hate crime was dreamed up by someone with good intentions but no judgement.

Sandy Says:
Cynapse my friend, you made the statement at the start of this thread that “if someone were in their seventies that might be the case.” Sorry, not so.
To no one in particular:
You know, the one thing I have never understood. When I was rejected by an employer or stopped on the street by police (yes, actually, that has happened when I was in the wrong place at the wrong time) I never, ever wondered if it was because I was white. I just figured there was another reason. So, why is it that anyone of colour immediately thinks their everyday problems or whatever are because of their race or religion? To me that is an excuse and a copout for not being able to look at other reasons.
If I screw up, its because I did something stupid or there was a misunderstanding — not because I am white. Same for blacks. Sometimes people who are black are the cause of their own problems, yet are too many take the time to look in the mirror, that maybe the problem is not because they are black but because they’re acting like a jerk.
If someone ignores me in a line at a restaurant, I don’t suspect its because of my race. I just think someone is not doing their job. Yet, I have heard people actually say that to a restaurant hostess. Paranoia in the extreme.
It’s everywhere and I am sick and tired of people of colour blaming everything on whites. That is nothing short of reverse racism. And, yes, blacks can be just as racist as whites.
Sorry, little rant over.

Cynapse Says:
Sandy, assuming you accept the general idea of a militant change within the black/female/gay/etc communities during the 60′s … that was about 45 years ago. Let’s say the average person in a position of authority attains it around the age of 25 (fair age to become a cop, non?)
That makes for about 70 years of age. Give or take a few years, sure. My point is that there was a time when blacks were supposed to be docile (same was true of virtually all minorities). Someone who was alive at that time and saw the social conditions that could inspire such a written utterance.
As for police encounters, never had any seriously negative ones myself. Been kicked out a couple stores for nefarious reasons but those stores didn’t last.
As for what you are sick of, I bet you’d be more sick of enduring the treatment that prompts such accusations. Honestly, hearing the complaints isn’t nearly as bad. And yes I’ve been on both the “hearing” side (in the Caribbean, as a member of the upper class) and the “getting” side.
Instead of trying to save face by straining for examples of other people behaving badly, like Mr G does, you’d be better served to explore why these accusations (right and wrong) are made in the first place and why they are so readily believed. Or you can move to Zimbabwe if you’re dead intent on claiming legitimate victimhood.

I had a chuckle a few months ago. A black acquaintance from the east coast was upset with the blacks he was meeting in Alberta. They didn’t play along with the “hey bro routine he was used to in the maritimes. It turned out the blacks he was talking about in Alberta were recent immigrants from Africa and not immersed in the racial divide evident in the maritimes.

Notice how no one ever objects to when Mr. G posts his “savage Negro” chat? Meanwhile I can draw out the entire spectrum from Sandy to John Luft (along with a series of cowardly cameos) just by bringing up some proven nasty bits of Canada’s history.
It’s not the actions of the wingnuts that determine a movement, but the reaction of the crowd to said wingnuts. In this simple rule much is learned.

————————
Did you even read this Denver Post article?
Read the FIRST sentence in the story!
“The Denver Police Department announced today that they have made 32 arrests during a sweep to end a four-month spree of what police said were racially motivated assaults and robberies in downtown Denver, including the LoDo entertainment district.”
For God’s sake does it have to be spelled out for you.
For crying out loud, this isn’t just one or two incidents, they arrested 32 Negroes and more suspects remain outstanding!
Posted on November 21st, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Cynapse Says:
And no details whatsover.
What made it racially motivated?
Since when are robbing circles racially motivated?
Of course you will take the story at face value because you hate black people and will accept any story that makes them look bad. Same is true of much of this wing, except they won’t come out and say it. Why would I believe you?
Plus, even if proven 100% true this is peanuts, garbage. An inner city robbing circle? oooooh, scary. It’s virtually no different from a normal robbing circle. Try finding examples of real racism – denying loans, forcing people out of the neighbourhoods, lynchings, denying promotions, cheating on land treaties. Not petty street crime.
But you pretty much have to exaggerate these little cases to prove that the “negroes are no better” and justify your own longer-running and far more devastating racism. It’s like me beating the shit out of a 2 year old and justifying it by saying he spit up on me.
Again, if you weren’t on a forum where racism is condoned you would be ripped right up (and you are likely exploiting that fact)
