The federal government is putting its CANDU reactor division up for sale but it will not affect the problem-plagued Chalk River facility at the source of Canada’s medical isotopes problems.
Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt issued a statement today confirming the government is inviting investors to submit bids for the Crown’s Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s assets.
“Nuclear energy is an emission-free source of power that is experiencing a renaissance around the world,” said the minister’s statement. “AECL’s CANDU Reactor Division needs strategic investors to take full advantage of this opportunity, strengthen its global presence and reduce the financial risks carried by taxpayers.”

PowerPlay interviewed former CNSC head Linda Keen about privatization of AECL. Other than blathering a few Liberal talking points, she didn’t come up with any reason why it shouldn’t happen and even suggested it might revitalize the industry.
