"Aww Jeez!"

Dems brace for voter backlash on health (2)

Posted by Jack On January - 1 - 2010

Democratic leaders are girding for a political war over the health care overhaul heading in to this year’s midterm elections, preparing strategies and raising funds to fend off attacks by Republicans eager to capitalize on voter discontent.

Analysts from both parties predict the sweeping impact of the proposed health care changes, which will affect every American, to be the overriding issue, with the strongest and most personal impact in 2010.

Democratic leaders acknowledged this week in last-minute party fundraising appeals that they expect Republicans to come out with both guns blazing in pursuit of major gains in the House and Senate.

“They will spend the next 11 months spinning our health care victory into a weapon and hitting us with it. We might have the momentum now, but we must show the GOP and the pundits that we can sustain it until the 2010 elections,” said Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

“Now that they lost this battle, they will be focusing their fight — and their millions and millions of dollars — on defeating us,” he said.

I got this in an email today…

My cat sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants, 24/7/365. His meals are provided at no cost to him. He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these accommodations absolutely free. He is living like a king, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day.

I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick in the head : My cat is a Democrat!

Unfortunately the backlash is deserved -
    1) Obama bill went too far in trying to take over the delivery and prioritization of health care services.  It would have been much easier and less scary to the freedom nuts if he simply pledged to be an insurer of last resort or drew up a bill forcing the states to do such
    2) The bill was force-fed through congress, giving members not nearly enough time to read its contents
    3) Obama’s made-for-TV rationales were poor.  He was trying to sell his endorsement rather than the principles of the bill
    4) Govt should have realized that public opposition was strong enough to at least consider making modifications.  Instead, mods were only made to buy off certain senators, showing a mild contempt for their population.

All of this plays into Republican hands to do what they do best – divide the population and declare war on the less fortunate – with full (scared) middle class endorsement.

Health is just like our “name the enemy” discussion.

It is hard to fix Health Care if they won’t focus on the problems. Here are some of them and if they were tackled there would probably be bi-partisan support and some Americans would be a lot better off and fewer harmed by excessive intervention of ObamaCare.

    1.      Get insurance coverage for the 30? Million not covered. Maybe put them in Medicare
    2.      Make health portable to something when you loose or switch jobs.
    3.      Get rid of the cross state Health portability impediments.
    4.      Deal with tort.
