The future of Gordon Brown’s premiership was hanging in the balance tonight after two senior Cabinet members called for a secret ballot on the Labour leadership.
Just four months before the expected general election, Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt have written to all Labour MPs to ask for the issue to be sorted out ‘once and for all’.
The two ex-ministers – both arch-Blairites – issued their call just moments before Gordon Brown faced his first Prime Minister’s Questions of the New Year.
Their timing was particularly devastating as Mr Brown was told of the attempted putsch just before he entered the Commons.
And it came just hours after Lord Mandelson launched a thinly veiled attack on Mr Brown.
The Business Secretary appeared to criticise the Prime Minister by urging ministers not to engage in a ‘class war’ with the Tories.

Seems he was so much in a hurry to send Tony Blair on his way so he could snatch up the prize. Now karma is coming around to see him set upon by his own party. Too bad Gordon. Sowing and reaping is what it is all about. Sow disension and disunity and you will no doubt reap the fruits later.
