ROME, Jan 10 — Hundreds of African immigrants have been evacuated from a southern Italian town, authorities said on Sunday, following some of the worst racial violence in Italy since the second world war.
The evacuation followed three days of clashes in the southern Calabrian town of Rosarno, which began when some local residents began attacking immigrants who responded by rioting.
At least 53 people, including 18 policeman, were injured in the unrest in the town, located in Italy’s southwestern toe.
Authorities moved more than 1,000 people, mostly illegal temporary workers from sub-Saharan Africa to immigrant centres around Italy in an operation that lasted from Saturday through to the early hours of Sunday.
Even workers with regular residence permits left the town to escape a climate that one political commentator compared to the 1960s Ku Klux Klan racial violence in the United States.
Immigrants without regular papers risk expulsion to their country of origin and the authorities on Sunday began demolishing their former makeshift homes in Rosarno.

While one can deplore the violence, surely the solution is rather obvious — namely, reduce the numbers of immigrants allowed into Italy and remove all illegal migrants from the country. There is nothing at all racist (despite what the title of the article claims) in a community wanting to determine who its members are and seeking to expel those it does not want. It is just a basic social impulse. If governments respected the wishes of their people, rather than kowtowing to the ideological tenets of multiculturalism, many of these so-called racist incidents would never happen.
Stop that man!! He is speaking of things that must not be spoken of. You do not have a choice about who and how many of them will be in your community and to even think it is probably a crime in somebodies book. Common sense is to be ignored. The will of the Collective has Spoken!
Strange Brew

If they got to choose the answer would always be zero, though the inverse doesn’t seem to carry too many rules, particularly where looting African minerals is concerned.
Pardon me for not crying for them. Glad to see you consider a situation that was likened to a KKK rally and started with an unprovoked attack as “sense” – and the right wonders why they have a bad reputation.

So the racists should run things? People shouldn’t be allowed to make a living because some far right jackass doesn’t want anyone who doesn’t look like him around? Give me the worst implementation of multiculturalism over that any day.
Cynapse, no one said anything about race or stopping people from making a living. But surely a group — any group for that matter – has the right to determine its own membership. If a country does not want to allow immigration, so be it. Why is that wrong? If a country wants to allow unrestricted immigration, is that anyone’s business but the people of that country? In Europe, as in any land where the liberal-left rule, the ideology of multiculturalism dictates that only its tenets hold sway. That means that no one save the high priests of that ideology may determine the rights and wrongs of immigration.
The Pope was right, the immigrants are human beings. No one with any grey matter disputes that. And they should be treated with basic respect. Yet, it is also the case that the respect he demands from Italians is not accorded to Italians (or citizens of most other countries) to determine what people they want to share their country with. And, as the article and your comment demonstrates, woe to anyone who might challenge the multiculturalist orthodoxy. For he who does is immediately branded a racist.
Mostly because that’s exactly what they are. Racism preceded multiculturalism so you can’t even try to pass this off as leftists trying to “label” anyone who doesn’t go along with their orthodoxy. My family came here in the 1930′s to Alberta and there wasn’t enough of any group to constitute multiculturalism, nor did immigrants strive to do anything other than become Canadian.
-Lack of free land? Nope
-Job opportunities? Yep
-Multiculturalism? Nope
Didn’t stop the racists from attacking. Those people will use any excuse at all to purify their land. You may say they have the right but they don’t on the basis they choose. Immigration is decided almost entirely on an economic basis. 4th+ generation Canadians aren’t producing enough specialists to keep this country afloat for even 10 years. We need doctors, IT types, etc and most of those people are coming from Asia. There is no economic argument against immigration of specialists.
Any sort of “ethnic preservation” or “cultural purity” argument should be branded for what it is – pure racism.
The Han do it in Western China, the Japanese do it throughout the Island, and the Italians are especially infamous for such behaviour. This is a country where entire soccer teams are sponsored by openly fascist and nazi-leaning political parties.
The Italians should treat the Negroes exactly like White people were and are treated in Zimbabwe,Kenya,Namibia,Algeria,Sud Africa,The Congo,Angola,etc.,etc.,etc.
There are no white people in Sudan or Congo.
Zimbabwe was an apartheid government that rightly got overthrown
Kenya was similar but did so through more legal means.
Lots of Europeans emigrate to Africa, particularly for retirement. I noticed Nigeria wasn’t on your list – could it be because they live well there?
Either you have no knowledge of African history or you are insane.
You can be trusted to properly recite African History much the same way Kirk Cameron can be counted on to provide an accurate biography of Charles Darwin.
I’m actually not interested in hearing your pro-Apartheid revisionism tonight. Maybe some other time.
“Congo hands land to South African farmers”
Check it,man,Mighty Whitey to the rescue,as usual!

Ya got me there. Of course this is a recent development.
So let’s revisit your original assertion …
“The Italians should treat the Negroes exactly like White people were and are treated in Zimbabwe,Kenya,Namibia,Algeria,Sud Africa,The Congo,Angola,etc.,etc.,etc.”
-Mr. G
So Italy should hand Africans large tracts of land? After all they’re doing the work that Italians don’t want to do and Europe needs to eat, right?
Also, this isn’t really helping your implication of African hostility.
Thanks for playing Mr. G. Where my Googling fails, your inconsistency can always be counted on to bail me out. Cheers.
Media likes to paint this as a racism thing because that sells, but if all those ‘immigrants’ were white the situation would be exactly the same.
#6 – Cynapse, the essence of your position is that the “right” of an immigrant to choose where he/she wants to live trumps the right of a community to decide if it wants that immigrant. Given your position, the only reason for immigration laws is, one supposes, not to create a backlash by allowing too many strangers in — the ends justifying the means. A government is, therefore, working for the immigrant against its own people. What a twisted approach to the concept of responsible government.
Multiculturalism has been recognized whenever multiple cultures congregate. Racism has often been the human result.
Why, because some people are stupid. More to the point, some don’t want to recognize that the truth is the only thing that we share in peace. Instead of making the effort to find truths to share, we lazily create lies to fool ourselves that we cannot live together.
It isn’t easy sharing the truth within one culture and religion, much less many.
Separating cultures to make your perceived world much smaller is only hiding your head in the sand.
Cuncator:
Wrong. The essence of my argument is that immigration should be based on economics and not whether the lazy local racists are scared of seeing someone “different” around. Immigration was not created to placate 3+ generation princesses. It is used to fill an economic need, which is what’s happening with the African migrants in Italy. If the Italians want to complain they should man up and take on the people orchestrating the illegal aspect of the trade – the mafia.
But they wouldn’t do that. Much easier to attack the defenseless Africans.
#16 – Given that immigration means the movement of people (with their culture and traditions) into another land, it is never just about economics. Europeans are now waking up to this reality, Canadians are still rather naive about this. A large enough congregation of people whose values are different, or opposed, to the host country’s means enormous social tensions, violence or worse.
The Africans were not so defenceless in this most recent case. In the videos on TV, they were the ones that were rioting, destroying private property and attacking bystanders. The Italian government is now relocating them, also at public expense. But I guess such rioting is always understandable since immigrants are entitled to live wherever they want.
Self-defense is almost always permissible. Africans did not come to Italy to start throwing punches. Italian police and citizens have a reputation for being incredibly brutal towards outsiders. 1 year ago they were at war with Roma migrants.
As my story above indicates, Canadians have always been aware of “the other” and how it may threaten hypocritical local social orders. If you didn’t have such open disdain towards immigrants who aren’t like yourself I’d be glad to tell you more. But there seems to be no point.
