The Conservative government will freeze the salaries and administration budgets of all departments, slash red tape, move to lift foreign investment restriction on some industries and toughen penalties for sexual offenders, according to its ambitious and controversial Speech from the Throne.
In language much more detailed and comprehensive than is usual for such a document, the speech also promises to examine the wording of the national anthem to make it more gender neutral –presumably referring to “all thy sons command” – and to invest in satellite technology to advance Canadian interests in the Far North.
Substantial investments are also promised to promote aboriginal education on reserves and to investigate the disappearances of aboriginal women.
But it is the promise to cut both red tape and to limit pay increases that will draw the most fire.

Whop-dee-do,
They’re overpaid by a county mile anyway.
Start rolling back their compensation and their ‘perks’ and it may make a difference.
He should do what Ontario’s Mikey did and do away with MP’s gold platted pension and give them RRSPs instead.
So they are looking for value for money spent. Great idea, lets de-fund the CBC.
The country could also save $8 billion per year in transfer payments if we kicked ‘the Socialist Republic of Quebecistan’ out of Canada. Or at the very least, reduced what they get.
And instead of freezing salaries, he should have cut them (Rae Days)like the right leaning former Ontario Premier Billy Bob Rae did during his reign of belt tightening.
Getting rid of the tax sucking CBC is another excellent idea as the guberment should not be in the Televison broadcasting business as there are lots from the private sector doing the same job.
Also, get rid of the also tax sucking ‘official bilingualism’ as brought in by Peeair Truedough and his Quebec loving liberal government.
Nasty business and I’m not ready to kick Quebec out of Canada. Our problem is that we (most of Canada) cannot speak or understand French and so the news media in that province have a clear track and we cannot rebut.
We can change that picture if we learn their language.
Right now I’m looking for a site on the net that can teach me and I need help.
I’m trying to learn the language of Liberals in Toronto. They seem to speak Obamalinsky. The Rosetta Stone doesn’t give courses in it. I don’t want to kick them out of Canada either and am trying to figure how to reach out to them.
I think the problem might be that everyone in Toronto has a degree in Gender Studies and just doesn’t comprehend how the real world works. Maybe Quebec has a similar problem … :>P
#1 stop the vote payments to parties ! #2 stop the transfers to most if not all rich country’s. #3 start cutting departments like bilingualism, and other departments not needed for the last twenty year’s. #stop indexed pensions or tax them at a higher rate? The list goes on and on
“Our problem is that we (most of Canada) cannot speak or understand French and so the news media in that province have a clear track and we cannot rebut.”
No problem. Canada’s worth it so let’s shell out a billion or so bucks and create a national broadcaster that will keep an eye on the Quebec media and honestly report back to all Canadians (including misinformed Quebecers) just what is going on inside that province. Oh wait a minute, we already have a national broadcaster, we’re already shelling out over 1,000 million dollars a year to fund it, they already have a mandate spelling exactly what and how they must operate. But it is not doing any of that with honesty and integrity. Instead it is prostituting itself on the alter of liberalism. It’s high time the CBC was dismantled and sold off. It serves no useful purpose to a united Canada.
Perhaps Canada should follow Quebecistan’s lead and have its own version of their anti English Bill 101 making English the only official language for the ROC!
Naw — Harper would never go for it. Does anyone notice that even he starts most of his speeches in French?
Who won that battle on the Plains of Abraham?
“Who won that battle on the Plains of Abraham?”
Quebec.
The Brits needed Quebec and bent over backwards not because they were nice guys but because it made economic sense. It still could and even Bouchard is trying to get Les Quebecois to deal with their debt problems. Like Greece blaming Wall St for lending it too much money , we’ll get blamed as soon as Jack learns French and sets up his blog to tell the Quebecois they are getting more then they are sending to Ottawa, few in Quebec know that because Radio Canada is a swamp of separatists and yes we should shut it down.
But this is a fixable problem and Jack’s point is correct in the sense that Quebecers are even more misinformed about what is happening than a Toronto voter reading the Globe and Mail.
I dont think Quebecers want to know as long as they receive their $8 billion annual gift from the ROC. Remember, this is a lieberal socialist Nation, sorry I mean province. And they constantly seem to be taking shots at Alberta.
Re: #10.. “But this is a fixable problem and Jack’s point is correct in the sense that Quebecers are even more misinformed about what is happening than a Toronto voter reading the Globe and Mail.”
“So” — where do “anglo canadians” go to learn French “for free”. Is there a site that can instruct us?
“Nope” — Quebec does not want “anglo’s” to learn the language because that would be cheating. Then we would all know what they think and what could we say about that?
Jsck if you are serious you should get Rosseta Stone … it costs a bit but..
I took French in school in Quebec, didn’t learn a darn thing , until ….I dated French girls…” so”…
Re :#13 — I am serious but I want it for free. Quebec can make that happen but is likely far to expensive and “for sure” they don’t want “Anglos” knowing what they are saying.
Good start on the Prime Minister and Mp’s salary freeze. Don’t stop there… freeze Peter Mansbridge’s salary and the rest at CBC. I bet Mansbridge ‘s salary is higher than the Stephen Harpers!!!
The PM should have CUT salaries all around. Heck, even Ontarios former looney left Premier, Billy Bob Rae cut all civil servants & others, salaries by 12 days each year for three years, commonly known as ‘Rae Days.’
If a socialist can do it, why not a conservative?
Re: #16. The PM should have announced a 10% cut to MP’s salaries and a similar cut to each MP’s operating budget. Honestly, these people could have easily adjusted to such a measure both personally and professionally without missing a beat and in turn reaped enormous political benefits. This is not rocket science folks, it’s called leading by example.
