Industry Minister Tony Clement has bemoaned the fact that Canada’s unemployment figures are at an “unacceptable level” and claims that job creation is a top priority of the federal government. If the minister is serious about this he might then well ask his colleague, Jason Kenny, the Immigration Minister, why our immigration levels are at such unprecedented high levels when there are 1.3 million men and women looking for work.
In the past two years while the country has been in the midst of a serious recession 483,000 immigrants entered Canada. In addition to the immigrants, in 2008 alone, 192,519 temporary foreign workers entered and joined the 170,975 who were already here — for an amazing total of 363,494. Why such high volumes if indeed the government is worried about job losses? Are ministers not aware that in the first year of recession Canada lost 486,000 full-time jobs and within the next few months 810,000 workers will run out of unemployment benefits?
In the past when Canada was entering into an economic downturn it was customary to turn the immigration tap off or at least to slow it down. The rationale was simple — what was the point in bringing to Canada immigrants who would find it difficult to find employment, and why make it more difficult for unemployed Canadians workers to get back to work?
However, for the past 20 years governments have set immigration levels extraordinarily high, aiming for about 250,000 per annum regardless of economic or labour force conditions. As the number of applications increased, an enormous backlog has piled up. In June of 2008 it was estimated to be between 900,000 and 950,000. Now it probably exceeds one million.

Unemployed Canadians should be upset about this, maybe they are, but people know that the immigration machine would brand them as racists if they dared speak.
Successive corrupt Liberal governments have poured millions into making immigration an industry of its own, entirely funded by government, and all those millions buy a lot of sympathetic media that will do their best to destroy anyone who questions the new orthodoxy.
Crooked LIberals and their supporters are very narrow-minded and condescending, they feel all self-righteous if they have the opportunity to use your money to bestow blessings on ‘people of colour’, whether those ‘blessings’ are a good thing or not.
All of the people that complain the loudest and cry racist the loudest have government cheques that pay their bills and they don’t worry about competition. Government is so huge, that it is now a major voting block.
And does our left leaning Conservative government plan to temporarily turn off the tap or at the very least, turn it back a notch or two?
Also, doesnt the Quebec nation have the right to set immigration quotas and if so, shoudnt other provinces have the same right?
Uh folks, unemployment is not driven by the number of people coming to Canada but by the ‘welfare state’ we have set up to keep our wages high. In fact if you imported several million people unemployment would go down as more and more people are needed to provide the goods and services for the newcomers.
Are there two UV’s on these boards?
More government workers to ‘supply services to newcomers’ would result in a slower economy due to the tax increases required for these ‘services’.
The current mass immigration levels produce higher unemployment, higher taxes and less opportunities for everyone – except unionized bureaucrats. Canadians should wake up to this reality.
Benefits to Canada from immigration aren’t like they used to be when skilled Europeans assimilated fairly easily or went home at a rate of 30%.
Today, no immigrants go back home and some refuse to assimilate – but the government spends millions anyway…..
There may be no benefits to your eugenics program, Philanthropist, but even a lazy observer can see that the majority of people in any highly technical or financial sector of nearly any school or large corporation are of Indian/Chinese origin. The local yokels aren’t producing anything close in terms of quality. It would make little difference to these people if they went to the US or (increasingly, btw) got their education at home. We’d sure be screwed though.
Philanthropist:
Look at your last paragraph -
they feel all self-righteous if they have the opportunity to use your money to bestow blessings on ‘people of colour’, whether those ‘blessings’ are a good thing or not.
Now look at your first -
but people know that the immigration machine would brand them as racists if they dared speak.
Are you more worried about being falsely accused or merely wearing a label that loses arguments? Shall we call a bird that quacks a swan?
High levels of immigration where many of the immigrants have no intention of integrating into the dominant social culture is a recipe for civil unrest in the future.
High levels of immigration alongside government sponsored affirmative action programs means active discrimination against those who are already here — and that will lead to civil unrest much sooner.
But nothing we say as conservatives will have any impact on the government’s policies. They are as uninterested as the Liberals were in what the common folk, living in their many “hell-holes”, might be thinking.
