OTTAWA — Records of Afghan detainee transfer orders showing whether Canadian military commanders took the risk of torture into account are buried in sea shipping containers and “may take years” to locate, the Military Police Complaints Commission was told Tuesday.
The revelation by Maj. Denis Gagnon emerged when he was closely questioned by lawyer Paul Champ, who said the commission is on the verge of deciding whether it has to suspend public hearings, partly because of missing and delayed documents from the Defence Department.
Gagnon said the documents are “all thrown together in a storage bin, a sea container” and an assessment of how long it would take to catalogue documents and identify the records requested by the commission may take years.
Earlier a senior military official testified that some Afghan detainee documents requested by the commission have been delayed to ensure no information gets out that could jeopardize the security of troops in Afghanistan.
“We know full well that Canada’s enemies are ready to use that kind of information against our troops that are deployed there,” Brig. Gen. Richard Blanchette said. “That is why there have been certain delays in producing those documents.”

Any further deaths of our troops can be blamed 100% on the liberal/ndp, and possibly the Speaker. Good news is, after the election and our majority, the Speaker will be replaced with a conservative. Wonder if he thought of losing all those perks.
Why doesn’t the government give full access to the documents by parking the sea cans containing the documents in the opposition offices and let the opposition dig it out for themselves?
Better yet, send the Opposition over to Afghanistan for a few years to look at the documents.
Given that we have only just started drawing down our Afghan deployment, and the detainee issue has been percolating for many months now, I find it rather questionable that the documents just happen to be so inaccessible. The deeper one goes into this story, the darker it becomes — somebody, in the CF, in the governments (Lib and Con) knows more than is being revealed.
Why do we care. Our troops apparently caught some “bad guys” in Afghanistan. They then turned them over to the Afghan authorities to be dealt with in accordance with Afghan law. We would expect nothing less if the same thing happened in Canada!
#5 – precisely! I won’t lose another minutes sleep if the some of ‘the bad guys over there’ are treated with a little DISrespect. It only prevents them from bombing the girl’s schools, or burning down the girl’s schools or from throwing acid in the faces of the girls as they are proceeding to or from school!
These freaks are barbarians and the world is a better place when they are at least locked up or at best dead!
# 5 and # 6 – I agree. Mary T – you said what I have been thinking all day; those slimy Troika thugs could care less about the brave soldiers defending the sorry behinds of the Troika and all of us. They are far more concerned about a terrorist ( a fanatic wearing no uniform, hiding among innocent children and women to use them as frounts while he does his murdering business) facing the wrong way to pray than they are about the soldiers that they sent to Afghanistan. No words suffice to express my outrage and my disgust.
