Barack Obama has warned Israel he will pave the way for an independent Palestinian state if the peace process remains deadlocked until the autumn.
The US president is proposing to hand control of the Middle East peace process to the international community unless there is a breakthrough in the next few months, Israeli officials have said.
Mr Obama has formulated a secret plan with leading European allies to convene an international peace conference by the end of the year, according to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper.
The move would fulfil one of Israel’s deepest fears by effectively stripping the Jewish state of its power to dictate the course of talks.
The conference would attempt to end decades of Israeli-Palestinian conflict by pressing both sides to accept difficult compromises on issues ranging from the future of millions of Palestinian refugees to the status of Jerusalem.
Mr Obama is also eager to gain international recognition for the creation of a Palestinian state.

“… imposing his own peace deal on the two sides.” – now that is an oxymoron!
Ah, the OBAMESSIAH powers are limitless as is his high opinion of his powers of persuasion: I guess if he reads a speech and it’s written on the prompter text that Israel has agreed to all his ” suggestions ” it will be true !
Why not give nukes to the Palestinians to solve the ” problem “, that would work …. LOL ! ( sarcasm ON ).
There is nothing this man can’t do (LOL) unless of course you consider that by the time he get’s around to it there will not be a Democrat politician in sight.
“Poof” — gone with the wind in November and there sits “Nutty Barry” contemplating his worst nightmare as it comes true. If I didn’t know better I might arrive at the conclusion that “Barry” is a Republican plant and his mission is to destroy the Democratic party.
I hope he succeeds.
Fast Update: Obama reminds me of “Nutty Wally” (video). I don’t know where this stuff comes from but it keeps my friends spilling tears as they laugh.
I missed my calling. I should have been a comedian and I know that because I’ve had many friends over the years in hysterics as they pick up on a “droll” comment I have uttered in regard to “this or that”.
This is my most recent one.
Not even Obama could be that much of a twit(could he?), so there must be much more to this story than has been presented here. What has Hillary been up to? Why would the Palestinians bother to finally come to the negotiating table after all this time if the international community (which caused all the problems in the first place) is slated to impose a settlement on their behalf?
Until more details come out I am inclined to read this as: Look away from our peace loving Mexican neighbors to the south, where we Democrats side with the drug cartels on an open borders policy and only 22,000 people have recently been killed in the violence, and gaze instead upon the war torn Holy Land, where, though not many people have actually died lately, and Hamas kills more Palestinians than the Jews do at any rate, rocks have been thrown, and egregious acts of overt vandalism are known to take place from time to time.
“The US president is proposing to hand control of the Middle East peace process to the international community … Obama has formulated a secret plan with leading European allies to convene an international peace conference by the end of the year”
Yup Obama and his statist pals will be right on it. As soon as they fix the PIIGS., the Obama Katrina spill, the bankruptcy of California and the illegals in Arizona
This secret plan is no secret any more …..sung to a tune by Frank Sinatra
His imposition of peace will only ensure that there will be war.
mid island mike
It’s a ruse. Everyone knows Israel doesn’t have to follow any rules. Obama is probably trying to get a small concession for his group’s 2010 midterm resume.
Re: #8 — It’s no ruse. Obama is God and he truly believes he can do this.
I’m not with him on this one.
If the Jewish voters still vote dem in nov. It will be them that destroys Israel !
Re #8, have you EVER been with him?
Re #9, not all Jews support Israel or its conduct over the last 20 years
What a dangerous man! The Middleast does not get “fixed” by next Tuesday or whenever he sets the deadline. The Chinese are absolutedly right when they opine, “may you live in interesting times”. This could be ugly.
Highly debatable whether it’s more dangerous than arming and giving carte blanche to the world’s most opposed regime, fern, but you are right about interesting times. They’ve been interesting for about 10 years and we just caught on.
Israel has nukes if push comes to shove …….
Very dangerous if Obama pushes so hard as to be perceived by the Israelis that the U.S.A. is no longer a reliable ally: In that case the influence of the U.S.A. on Israeli policies drops to zero and if it emboldens the Iranian Insane President to do something stupid I see some newly formed glass where a Capital used to be.
Clinton almost got a peace deal except that the Nobel Peace prize winner Arafat decided that getting 99% wasn’t enough and preferred the Intifada instead. At least Clinton was smart and diplomatic, Obama just seems to me to have a big mouth, a great stage presence and voice that got him elected …. maybe smart but not street smart or a real statesman: In my opinion a very very scary guy to have in charge when his competence is seriously in doubt !
Obama, best before date was sometime a year in the past, and I was ready to give him the benefit of the doubt early on ….. obviously Obama isn’t concerned about what I think of him but if he goes down any lower in the opinion polls it won’t be me but 80% of the American likely voters in November who will have lost confidence in the Dope and Change ( change of underwear ).
All this seems like as good an idea as shaking a jar full of nitro glycerine to get rid of it it by blowing it up in your face !
Regarding Clinton, (although he was not my favourite president of the last century) – he worked very hard and put the prestige of his administration and the US on the line to get a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israelis. Does anyone really think Obama has the cache to pull this off? I think not.
Re # 15: Yeah I was never a great fan of Clinton but it’s probably Hillary that was/is the committed liberal while Clinton was probably much more pragmatic and definitely a good communicator and a charming guy with charisma.
On the Israeli/Palestinian problem he did the best anyone could when one side just couldn’t accept a favourable solution for all by never missing the opportunity to miss an opportunity ! Even if the treaty wasn’t perfect where would the Palestinians be now if they had had a couple of decades of peace with the Israelis and been good trading partners and neighbours, I’m sure that by now any remaining irritants could have been resolved as enemies became trusted friends !
Well, hate for hate’s sake as well as pride seemed more important than finding a way to have better lives !
