Government lawyers reject Iacobucci inquiry findings (1)

The federal government, in contesting a $180 million lawsuit by three Muslim-Canadians, is refusing to accept the factual findings of its own judicial inquiry into the detention and torture of the men in Syria and Egypt.

It means Canadian taxpayers could end up paying millions more to re-establish the same facts set out by the $6- million inquiry headed by former Supreme Court Justice Frank Iacobucci.

“They (the government) will spend as much again re-litigating this, if not more,” said lawyer Philip Tunley, who represents Egyptian-born Ahmad El-Maati.

“The cost will be enormous,” he said.

Hey, the gov’t of Canada is the new lotto for folks who knowingly come from and go to countries where human rights are minimal. Read the travel advisories next time, so taxpayers don’t have to pay for your foolishness. On the other hand, if they have ties to questionable groups (Al Quaeda, etc.), the Canadian gov’t is a great way to channel more funds if lawsuits are successful, isn’t it? I would like to see a compiled list of the names of the individuals who have tried to sue in the past (what countries are involved? how many trips have they made to and from Canada?)

No more citizenship for refugees would put an end to this BS. Canada should stop being the only western country that does so. Do ya think all the other countries have valid reasons for not following our foolish actions? Duh.

Good old Stephen Harper, a PM and party leader like any other PM and party leader; they can always be trusted to know what the facts are even if the facts disagree with what they know.

I am reminded of that great Myth Busters quote – “I reject your version of reality and substitute my own
