Peter Milliken is hanging up his Hansard.
The longest-serving Speaker of the House of Commons has been reading the official record of parliamentary proceedings since he was a teen.
Mr. Milliken announced Saturday that after 22 years as the Liberal MP for Kingston — nine of them as referee in the fractious Commons — he’s had enough.
He won’t seek re-election.
“I’m tired and I think it’s time to move on and get some more time at home,” Mr. Milliken said in a phone interview shortly after informing his supporters of his decision during a barbecue in his riding.
He’ll continue as Speaker and MP for Kingston and the Islands until the next election, whenever that is.
“It’s my duty. I was elected for that term. I’ll do it.”

Might be a good GG
Peter is tired. Who would not be in his position? Dealing with morons in the official opposition for over four years is enough to drive anyone to distraction and Peter has earned his rest.
I wish him well in retirement.
Like myself, there is a time to go and he has decided his time is now. I agree.
He’s done enough. It’s far past time for him to start enjoying his family and local friends while he is still in good health.
Being Speaker of the House is like being a referee in a wrestling match, the game is phoney and for show only (when the cameras are on)

On a serious note, Ontarians should fill up their gas tanks before Thursday when the McGuinty ‘Harper Sales Tax’ kicks in with a 8% increase in the cost of fuel as well as hydro..
It’s OK UV … Ontario needs the HST money to replace the burnt out police cars
#4…perhaps the Toronto police should send a bill to Ottawa to cover all the police cars being destroyed since it was their decision to have it in Toronto. After all, whats a billion or so of taxpayers money among friends?
Where ever they held the summit in Toronto, or Ontario, those thugs has their sights set on destroying downtown Toronto area. The media and opposition were determined that Toronto would not shine during this event. The union thugs would have marched where ever it was held.
Send a bill for 5,000. to every person detained to teach them a lesson. I think the big shock to the thugs is they actually got arrested and Canadians outside of Toronto think they should be jailed for a long time and banned from ever protesting again. How those so called peaceful marchers and onlookers could stand and take pictures of their city burning and being destroyed is beyond me. How many of them will turn up in Seoul in November.
Quebec, keep your thugs home. Those buses should have been searched. How many of them resist showing ID or being searched when going on a plane, or to some concerts, or if stopped for a traffic violation.
