Justice for Jane Creba?

Everyone remembers when 15-year-old Jane Creba was murdered on Boxing Day 2005, caught in a deadly crossfire between two rival gangs in the heart of downtown Toronto, while shopping with her sister.

Last week, the final two of the four men convicted in Creba’s murder were sentenced.

So, did we get justice?

You decide.

Tyshaun Barnett and Louis Raphael Woodcock, both 23, were convicted of manslaughter in Creba’s murder and on four counts of aggravated assault for wounding others.

At the time of the shooting, both were under court orders not to possess firearms due to their criminal records.

On Thursday, Superior Court Justice Gladys Pardu sentenced each to 12 years in prison for manslaughter and eight years concurrent for the aggravated assaults.

But with two-for-one credit for four years spent in pre-trial custody, plus parole, they could be free in just over two years.

Typical.  Why give this case more attention than any of the others?

Perhaps because Jane is gone but not forgotten.  The matter is important and time has not dulled the public interest.  Our courts tend to forget that as they apply Canadian justice to armed thugs who should not be given any semblance of mercy.

They did the crime — they should do the time.

Eight years concurrent for aggravated assaults -  Let me translate that from Canadian justice speak to plain english.  Freebees every single one of them……plain and simple.

Same thing if someone kills 10 people in Canada.   1 life sentence, 9 concurrent.  Again, liberal….er I mean literal translation, 9 freebees.  It’s about time some of the liberal ‘hug a thug’ laws were changed in this country.  Time to put priorities in the proper order in our justice system (and I use the term loosely).  Deterrance and denunciation first, then rehabilitation.
