Seven-year-old Heaven Sutton was selling cold drinks and candy at a street stand with her mother when she was shot to death, becoming the 253rd victim this year of Chicago’s surging murder rate, police said on Thursday.
Sutton and her mother, Ashake Banks, were about to close up their stand on Wednesday night when two men approached and began shooting. Heaven was shot in the chest, and a 19-year-old man standing nearby was wounded in the leg, police said.
“This is not about crime. This is about values. Take your gang conflict away from a seven-year-old,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel angrily told reporters.
“You have a seven-year-old selling lemonade,” he said. “Where were you raised and who raised you? Stay away from the kids.”
Emanuel pledged to make Chicago’s streets safe when he became mayor last year.

I was going to make a smart Alec comment about the Feds enforcing the commerce clause but this tragedy is too much for levity. I do hope the family can find solace in the face of this horrible loss.

Good article Jack. I was in a restaurant last night and observed two families raising their children. One family had the children sit quietly and talk softly before during and after the meal. The other family had the kids running amok, throwing glasses of water on the floor, yelling and screaming and making everyone’s dining experience not one to be repeated. The difference was simply one family DEMANDED their children behave, The other family was trying to negotiate with a bunch of little tyrants all the while excusing their behavior because ‘ well they’re just kids’.
One thing that bugs the he– out of me is people who make excuses for misbehaving brats, twits, thugs, and tyrants because of their age or skin colour or situation in life or…..
Final comment on this – the media sanitizes crime by not telling the full details and treats the perpetrators as victims of society. Well they are right – society did ‘em wrong – no education, no jobs and no morality. Cheers.
