MONTREAL — François Legault had a decent if unimaginative line this summer when he said Quebec Premier Jean Charest has shown about as much leadership and vision as the “captain of the Titanic.”
But really, it’s the leader of Quebec’s new conservative party who’s in danger of sinking.
Mr. Legault’s eight-month old Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) was once a serious threat to the ruling Liberals. Billed as a right-of-centre breath of fresh air in a provincial political scene gone stale, the party excited people with its harsh dissection of everything that is ailing Canada’s second-largest province: crippling debt, sky-scraping high school drop-out rates and a dwindling penchant among young people to start new companies among other things.
