TORONTO — The Harper government’s foot-dragging on the return of Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay is unprecedented in light of the commitment it gave the United States that it would accept his transfer to Canada, a former diplomat says.
Gar Pardy, who spent more than three decades with Canada’s foreign service, said it was on the basis of that commitment that Khadr pleaded guilty before a widely maligned U.S. military commission to war crimes committed as a 15 year old.
“It’s more than extraordinary, it’s unprecedented,” Pardy said of Ottawa’s inaction.
“I don’t think there’s any enthusiasm by any of the people in the Canadian government to see him come back to Canada — they’re trying to drag it out in every way possible.”

“The Harper government’s foot-dragging on the return of Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay is unprecedented ….”
Duh…..the Canadian government’s so-called ‘foot-dragging’ is unprecedented because this is an unprecedented situation. Our government is putting our country and the safety of ordinary peace loving Canadians first. Ahead of the so-called ‘rights’ that this murderous devious western culture hating sub-human demands he receive under Trudeau’s bastard Charter. For some that is a bad thing. Shobie has the situation exactly correct when she states that Omar Khadr is a symptom of a larger sickness in society. Who comprises this sick segment of our society? She is again correct when she identifies the left, the leadership of the left, and Islamists.

Quote: “Under his October 2010 plea deal, Khadr, 25, became eligible to transfer to a Canadian prison last fall. Toews, however, has steadfastly refused to authorize the transfer, saying Khadr’s potential threat to canadians needs to be evaluated.”
Eligible means that a convicted canadian in a foreign jail ” CAN BE ” repatriated to Canada to finish his/her sentence under canadian rules: And this may be a good thing when it means removing a canadian rotting in a foreign jail in a country with excessive and cruel punishment relative to the crime committed according to canadian values held by most canadians.
There are also cases of canadians jailed in foreign countries where the justice system is corrupt and where they may very well be innocent of the crime they where convicted of, or crimes that would not be crimes in Canada: So getting these repatriated and immediately paroled would be a good use of the discretion of the Government: Eligible doesn’t mean that we have to repatriate a canadian in foreign custody !
With Kahdr the situation is reversed as he should be serving his original sentence of 40 years instead of the 8 years plea deal. Adding in the danger to Canada of having this very dangerous fanatic back in the country, dragging their feet is the least the Government should do and considering charges of treason should be on the table, although not sure this would be legally/politically possible or probable ?
