Obama angers military groups with lawsuit against Ohio early voting law (2)

Fifteen Ohio military groups have gone to court to oppose an “offensive” lawsuit filed by President Obama’s campaign that challenges a law allowing military members to vote on days when the rest of the state cannot.

“The Obama campaign’s and Democratic National Committee’s argument that it is arbitrary and unconstitutional to afford special consideration, flexibility, and accommodations to military voters to make it easier for them to vote in person is not only offensive, but flatly wrong as a matter of law,” the military groups — which include the Marine Corps League, the Association of the U.S. Army, and the Association of the U.S. Navy —argued in their filing.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also attacked Obama over the issue. “President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage,” Romney said in a statement today.

Other than simple pandering to one specific group of individuals and their supporters, why should there be one set of rules for some, and a completely different set for others?

Thankfully when I was in the Navy and out of country during elections I was allowed to vote early. I remember voting early in a Manitoba election ( I was still registered in Manitoba) when I was overseas somewhere, can’t remember now where. Ya, that’s right….I got special treatment. Damn me. Just who in hell did I think I was anyway? Ballots are actually sent to Canadian (and other country’s) military early so that they can participate in elections back home just like everybody else not in spite of everybody else, sl. That way they can and have their votes back in country in time to be counted or vote early before they even leave. Also many military personnel (imagine the #’s in the U.S. military) are about to be deployed and if not afforded ‘special treatment’ would not be able to vote in an election. Therefore the military across the board is granted special voting rights rather than try and cherry pick individuals who might or might not be here to vote. Imagine the logistical nightmare of trying to figure that out without anybody being denied an opportunity to vote. That makes all the sense in the world and denying military these special voting rights makes zero sense. In fact it infringes on their rights. But you support the military being forced to adhere to voting dates/times just like everybody else? You agree with Obama so you agree with the American military being assigned second class citizenship status? But then when was the left worried about anybody’s right who disagreed with them and right now the American military is not singing faux Navy SEAL Obama’s praises so yup, stick it to’em.

      Well said Beentheredonethat.
I have come to believe that some people really don’t believe in one person, one vote.
The snow birds are allowed to vote ahead of spending the winter in Florida but not the military??? Sad.

Advance polls for those who are unable to vote on election day, for any number of reasons, is a practice in all elections is it not beentheredonethat?

Attempting to lead people into believing that advance polls would be denied military personal is, like the SOS article title Jack linked, more than just a little disingenuous.

And in all cases are not ballot boxes made available to military personal posted out of the country? For advance polls as well as on election day?

Heard on the radio today (Sirius) that only 5% of the military vote was counted in the last federal election. (US) Wasn’t it one of the Russian leaders that said that it matters not who votes – instead it matters who counts the votes?
