Ontario politics somehow just became even stupider.
The minority Liberal government of Premier Dalton McGuinty is in a bit of a fix. Despite spending billions on education over his first two (majority) terms, McGuinty didn’t bank nearly as much good will with the teachers as he was expecting. Now that Ontario has run out of money, he’s been forced to bite the hand that used to feed the teachers — his own. They aren’t taking it well.
McGuinty has made clear that the teachers are in for something close to a wage freeze (the PCs insist it isn’t, but the teachers are sure acting like it is). If they don’t accept contracts along those lines, McGuinty will legislate a new contract onto them and get what he wants, anyway.
