Warped and misleading report claims 100 million dead by 2030
You’d think that any report with a skull and a dollar sign on its cover would provoke a smidgin of media skepticism, but it seems that the word “climate” — especially when combined with big, scary numbers — still has the power to deep-six objectivity and bring out the axe-swinging crusader in many journalists.
A truly sensational example appeared last week with the widespread and uncritical regurgitation of a warped and misleading report called Climate Vulnerability Monitor: A Guide to the Cold Calculus of a Hot Planet. The report was produced by a Madrid-based “humanitarian” organization, DARA, and under the aegis of a group of 20 countries — such as Bangladesh and the Maldives — whose top priority is to get their hands on the annual US$100-billion climate slush fund that developed countries promised after the debacle of Copenhagen.
