Dear Mayor Tory — this is not acceptable
We appreciate that Dr. de Villa is laser-focused on eradicating a virus that has tragically proven deadly for many high-risk people, but her approach lacks balance and is out of step with that of many other medical officers throughout North America.

Dear Mayor John Tory:

You have signalled that you will be backing Dr. Eileen de Villa’s request to keep Toronto in lockdown for the foreseeable future.

We have questions. We have concerns. We have a message that we need to get across to you.

While it is true Toronto is technically leaving a “stay-at-home” order and entering the grey zone, that means — according to the provincial framework — the city will still be in lockdown.

Very little will change. It just means small retailers will now be allowed to reopen at 25% capacity. But we agree with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business that those stores should have never been forced to close as it is.

More should be reopened. More progress must be made. And it must happen now, not later.

Cities in the United States such as New York City, Chicago and Boston have all responsibly and safely reopened more than Toronto has done. They did it weeks ago and it hasn’t caused the sky to fall.
